NEW TMC Prenatal Class-THE PRENATAL

NEW AND IMPROVED as of September 2023! Now run by our very own Sarah Leslie, RM.

Time: 9:30am- 1:30pm (available monthly)

Location: Zoom

Duration: 4 hours

This class is meant for soon to be parents who are looking for prenatal education from the comfort of their own home. This is a small, interactive online Zoom class where you can learn the basics about labour, birth and your healing in the postpartum.  Most folks who take this class are first time parents but if you are looking for more information about how to make your next birth a better experience this class might be a great fit for you. We will focus on the basics but you will also learn some pro tips to make this the best experience possible.

This 4 hour class costs $100 per couple or $50 per person. If you are unable to pay, let Sarah know and we can see about reducing your cost or waiving the class fee. You can e-transfer to SarahLeslieRM@gmail.com to secure your spot in the class.

NEW-THE IN PERSON

Location: The Midwives’ Clinic of East York-Don Mills

Duration: 2 hours

In the world of online classes this is a completely different class because it's IN PERSON!! This class is two hours long with the intent on teaching you the hands on skills you'll need when having a baby. If there is something you want to learn that you don't see you can email Sarah before the class and she'll add your requested skill to the class content. The other participants will thank you!  

By joining us, you can expect to walk away with the following:

  • Labour and birthing positions to help support your labour to be as efficient and productive as possible. 

  • Tricks to help with pain in labour (counter pressure, TENS machine placement, sterile water injections, hot and cold packs).

  • Monitoring in labour (what does it look like and feel to have an IV, epidural and external/internal fetal monitoring)

  • Breast/Chest feeding positions and the general basics of getting a deep latch.

  • and more….

THE NEWBORN

Duration: 3 hours

Course Description:

Welcoming your baby to the world can be a transformational event in any one’s life, and unfortunately, babies don’t come with a manual. We have created this course with you in mind, whether you are new parents, experienced parents, or even soon-to-be grandparents, this course covers the A-Z of what to expect with a newborn from sleep to feeding to diapering a baby.

By joining us you can expect to walk away with the following:

  1. Identify normal newborn appearances and behaviour

  2. Understand the basics around an ideal latch for breastfeeding

  3. Learn about healing and recovery from birth and information about postpartum mood disorders

  4. Baby hygiene (diapering, bathing and dressing baby)

  5. What to expect from a newborn, including sleep, and how you can grab some zzz’s too.

  6. Normalizing the 4th Trimester and how to cope

  7. How to build your village

You will also receive our Postpartum Survival Guide, which covers everything we cover in class, this way if you forget anything after baby arrives you have easy access to all the information in your trusted guide.

THE REFRESHER- Newborn Refresher/Parenting Class

Duration: 2 hours

Time: Varies. See event dates for details.

Course Description:

Are you welcoming baby number 2, 3, 4? This class is for you! At this point, you know a few things about newborns but you want a little refresher! The first hour of this course will cover the newborn basics of appearance, behaviour and sleep. The second hour will be tailored to you and your classmates. Do you want to talk about parenting, toddler transitions, coping strategies, your feeding plan in relation to your last experience? You name it we will cover it!

Before the course, you will receive a survey to create content specific to you. After the class, you will also receive our Postpartum Survival Guide, which covers everything we cover in the Newborn 101 class, this way you can get the benefits of both classes!

THE PRIVATE CLASS

Folks want private classes for so many different reasons! If you're busy and want to schedule a few sessions to break down the material or just get it all over at once we can figure out the time and the content you wish to cover. Sarah can talk about labour, birth, postpartum and newborns for hours!  What we'll do is create the class for you and make sure to cover all of your questions and concerns. 

Sarah offers a private class to discuss your past birth experience and how you can strategize for your next birth. She can also review your previous feeding experience and offer suggestions and resources for your next baby. 

Sarah offers private THE PRENETAL, THE NEWBORN and THE REFRESHER.

Birthing While Black- Ancestral Hands

The Ancestral Hands Foundation (operating as Ancestral Hands Midwives) is a Black-led, community-based organization. Their mission is to advance Black maternal health care, reduce racial disparities in maternal outcomes and improve the experience of care for Black people during the perinatal period

No registration required. Feel free to join us by dropping in. We will have former client guest speakers, some slides about out of hospital safety and benefits, set up home birth equipment, and of course snacks!

Out of Hospital Birth Information Class

Duration: 1.5 hours

Date and Time: December 6 @ 6:30pm-8pm

Did you know?

  • Studies show that a planned out of hospital birth with a midwife is just as safe as hospital birth for normal pregnancies and healthy clients.

  • Out of hospital births are associated with less interventions during labour and birth.

  • Clients who give birth at home or the Toronto Birth Centre are at lower risk of infection.

Do you want more information about home birth and The Toronto Birth Centre? If you come to this session you can:

  1. Learn about the benefits and risks associated with out of hospital births.

  2. See how midwives set up for a home birth and learn about the equipment we carry to make it a safe choice.

  3. Learn about the special training midwives receive to make home birth or TBC birth a safe option for clients and their families.

  4. Ask any questions that you have about out of hospital birth.

  5. Meet families who have had a birth at home or the TBC and hear their stories.
